CHAPTER 21
Selena. Selena. Wake up.
Selena roused from sleep and rubbed her eyes. The double bed squeaked when she pushed up on her elbows to search for the voice. Had it been real or a dream?
The pale-yellow walls glowed with the early morning light streaming in through the window. She pushed the blue and white quilt aside and glanced around the room. The delicious aroma of bacon hung in the air, and her stomach growled the whole time she dressed and quickly made the bed.
The whispering returned when she reached the top of the landing.
Selena. Help me. Please.
Selena carefully walked halfway down the staircase and stopped at the photo of her grandmother. The woman looked impossibly young, not much older than she was now. She removed the frame from the wall and took it downstairs.
âSomething smells yummy,â Selena said when she entered the kitchen.
Gigi stood at the stove with a large blackened cast-iron pan in front of her. Bacon sizzled and popped as she flipped the strips over, maneuvering them around to cook evenly.
âBe a dear, Selena, and take the muffins out of the oven for me, please,â Gigi said.
âSure thing.â Selena put the frame on the kitchen table in front of her chair and snagged a pair of oven mitts from a hook hanging next to the stove. She retrieved the muffin pan and placed it on the counter to cool. She leaned over and breathed in the heavenly scent of warm cinnamon and bananas.
âSmells good in here,â Rainey said, clomping into the kitchen. âYou need any help, Gran?â
âSelena and I are doing fine.â Gigi winked at Selena. âArenât we, girl?â
âYes, we are.â Selena slipped off the oven mitts. She opened the cabinet and took out three plates. âIâll set the table.â
âWhatâs this?â Rainey picked up the picture. âWhy is this here?â
âI wanted to ask you two about that, actually.â Selena set the plates out on the small round table. âHas this picture ever called to you?â
Raineyâs brow creased. âWhat are you talking about?â
âYesterday, when I got here, this picture called to me.â Selena pointed to the image. âIt did it again on my way down this morning. Maybe Iâm crazy or something, I donât know.â
Gigi clucked her tongue. âNo one in this family is crazy.â
Rainey snickered. âI donât know if thatâs entirely true.â
âYouâre just sensitive, sweetheart, like the rest of us.â Gigi frowned at Rainey. âRegardless of what your aunt says, Iâve never had that particular picture call to me. But Iâve had others.â
âWhat did you do about it?â Selena asked.
âI connected with whoever was in the picture, or at least, I attempted to. I wasnât always successful.â Gigi slid the bacon onto a paper towel-lined plate. âSelena, will you get the butter and muffins on the table, please?â
âYes, maâam.â Selena nodded. She transferred the warm muffins from the pan onto a plate, then grabbed the old-fashioned white butter bell from the counter.
Selena pulled the silverware from a drawer and finished setting the table. Her aunt put out juice glasses and a small pitcher of orange juice.
